10 Social Media Marketing Myths BUSTED!

Ok, it’s time to come clean. At one point or another, you’ve thought about promoting your small business on social and thought, “Ugh – do I really need to be on all the social media” or “I don’t have time for social” or “my target audience isn’t on social media.

​But I’m here to tell you that a lot of what you’ve might of heard about marketing on social media isn’t true – they are just ugly rumors giving social a bad name.  Here are some popular social media myths and why they are just rumors:


1. You have to be on all networks

A lot of people believe that if you’re going to be on social media – you HAVE to be on all the networks, and that’s just not true.  Knowing your brand, your customer, and the purpose of each network is the best way to know where you should be.  The best approach is to start with one network and then expand to others later on.

2. Push only your product

Do you open up your Instagram/Facebook account wishing and praying you are bombarded with all the promotions and products the brands you follow?  I didn’t think so – neither do I.  You follow certain brands because of the content they give you and the way they make you feel , right?  Well, so do your customers.  So don’t only push product on them.  Give them a behind the scenes look at you, your life, your brand, and what it represents.

3. More followers equals more engagement/more sales

It’s true – the word followers has this hidden meaning that more is better, but that’s not the case.  You can do a lot more with a small number of followers that are truly engaged in your product/service than with 100k followers that rarely like or comment on your posts.  You know I’m going to say it . . . quality over quantity.

4. Organic is the only way to grow your audience

Sure, growing your audience organically has its benefits – but it’s not the only way.  Collaborating with other businesses can have a really strong impact on growing your followers, just as doing ads can, which gives you the ability to really target your audience. Also, working with influencers in your field will help your brand grow, too.

5. Social media marketing should only take 10 minutes a day

Not going to lie, this one gets under my skin.  Anytime I see an article that says, “Spend 10 minutes on social media each day!” I just want to say – that’s a load of …..!  The truth is, you should spend time preparing for your social media strategy – not actually posting on social.  Spend a couple of hours during a span of one or two days and plan your social media posts for the month – this way, you have everything you need and then yes, posting your content during the day will only take 10 minutes.

6. You must “get” social media to succeed

Listen, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you – social media isn’t rocket science. All it is, is another form of marketing. If you own a small business, you’ve doing sales, made up promotions, networked, maybe even done tradeshows – all of those are a form of marketing. You might not have known what you were doing when you started, but you got the hang of it.  Social media is the same way.  Practice makes perfect!  And also – it doesn’t take a millennial or someone young to do social media effectively. Anyone can learn –remember, it’s not rocket science.

7. Social Media is separate from your other marketing efforts

Although it does require its own efforts, social media should be a part of your overall marketing/brand strategy.  It should convey the same look and feel as your website, your store front, your service, and your overall brand.  Social is not its own stand-alone strategy – it’s a way to enhance all your other marketing efforts.

8. My customers aren’t on social media

A couple of months ago, Instagram just reached their 1 billion user mark – ONE BILLION USERS – and that’s just for Instagram!!!! We still going to argue that your target audience isn’t on social?  As of earlier in 2018, the Pew Research center reported that 69% of the U.S. population uses at least on one social media platform and that number continues to grow every year. So yes, trust me – you’re audience is on social.  They might not use it the way you think, or as often, or maybe use some selected networks – but they are there.

9. If you build it – they will come

Sorry to disappoint, but this isn’t a scene from Field of Dreams. If you simply launch your social media accounts, don’t expect people to flock to it just because it’s there.  You have to consistently show up, actively engage with users, and give content of value to grow your following.  In fact, having accounts that you don’t update with content on a regular basis might hurt you instead of help.  Don’t just post things when you remember or when you have the time.  With social media, you have to show up on a consistent basis to let your audience know that you are just as engaged as they are.

10. I don’t have time for social media.

Well, no one has time for anything these days.  We are all so busy with work, family, friends, hobbies, ourselves and if you’re a small business owner – forget it!  There’s so much on your plate and so many hats you wear that time is a luxury that you don’t have.  But when it comes to social, – just like you would do to handle payroll issues, or staff problems or customer service work – you have to MAKE TIME.  The time is there, you just have to dig for it and find it.
